How Serious Are Theft Charges?
The severity of shoplifting and other theft charges depends on the amount of money or the value of the property that was stolen. For cases involving less than $100, the penalties can include a jail sentence of ninety days. If the item is valued at over $100 but less than $500, then the charge will be a misdemeanor; if the item is valued at more $500, then the charge will be a felony and can include a jail sentence of up to 15 years.
Even the least serious cases can result in large fines and a permanent mark on your record that could eventually impact your ability to pursue your education, advance your career and secure housing. Our lawyers are here to help you avoid these consequences and keep your life on track.
Is There a Larger Problem?
One critical element of criminal defense is looking at the big picture. We not only investigate the crime and examine the evidence, but we get to know you as a person. If there are substance abuse or chemical dependency issues that drove you to steal, we can make sure you get the help you need. By taking the time to really learn about your unique situation, we not only defend you, we really help you.
If this was your first offense and it was a one-time mistake, we may be able to get the charges against you reduced or even dropped. We are committed to doing what is right for you.
